Episode 07: Replace Ray Bradbury with Janet Campbell Hale & Honestly Any Book Written By A Woman Of Color Would Be Better Oh My God This Guy What A Piece Of Work.

You know why ‘separating the art from the artist’ is some major bullshit? I mean, aside from the fact that it a luxurious, privileged as hell white (mostly man’s) notion? Because art comes from the artist. And if one’s world view as a human artist is one of misogyny and racism being awesome or the norm and said artist is super cool with that, then said artist’s art is going to be full of, and about, normalizing misogyny and racism being cool. Ray Bradbury wrote racist, misogynist crap because that was his word view and making students read his garbage in class year after year is, itself, lazy, racist, and misogynist seriously have we mentioned those things lately? This episode is a doozy, and concludes Leigh and Elanor’s initial seven episode run of Damned Scribbling Women and because there are a billion-dy women authors worth talking about that would be excellent replacements for Captain Sexist/Racist Bradbury, we talked about a whole bunch of them. These women are some of our favorites. If you liked the show, we’d love to record more episodes, so drop us a note to tell us and please suggest your favorite woman author with reasons why you love her. Otherwise, DSW will linger on the interwebs forever and that’s not bad for a Covid_19 project. So, for this seventh episode, here are some women who can write circles around Ray Bradbury, and who also are simply better people than he was - which might be partly why they are better writers. Thank you so much for listening, and here’s the round-up of this episode’s glorious women authors:

Janet Campbell Hale * The Jailing of Cecelia Capture * Women on the Run * The Owl’s Song * Bloodlines: Odyssey of A Native Daughter (Another excellent replacement for Of Mice and Fucking Men)

Zadie Smith * White Teeth * Swing Time

Isabel Allende * The House of Spirits * City of the Beasts
